I just finished reading a recent book on the history of the secret services of the USSR, by Slava Katamidze. If you're looking for an introduction on the Soviet secret services, this is a nice book, illustrated with many unique images. From Dzerzhinsky's Cheka, over the OGPU, NKVD and KGB to the new Federal services FSB and SVR.
The book tells the story of some of the most notorious spy cases and reveals details on many of the high ranked people within the secret services. Katamidze also presents some new - questionable - facts and numbers, unfortunately not adding any sources, giving the book a sense of subjectivity. Nonetheless a fascinating introduction and beautiful illustrated book. ISBN 1930983239
